Inkscape is an open source (GPL2) Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) editor that can be compared to Adobe Illustrator or Corel Draw. Started in 2003 Inkscape is in constant evolution and become better on each release.

Inkscape provides a lot of tools to create objects. With Pencil, Pen, Paint Bucket and Calligraphy you can draw paths in different ways: freehand, Bezier spline, ... You also have the classical tools like Rectangle, Ellipse, Polygon and Text. Image import (PNG, JPEG and BMP) is supported and object cloning to create from an existing object.

Objects can be manipulated including moving, rotating and skewing, can be grouped together. Inkscape has an improved clipboard allowing copy and paste of objects. Each object has style properties that can be set. You can fill an object (with a solid color, a gradient, a pattern, ...), set its opacity or apply filters.

Inkscape supports full anti-aliased and alpha transparency display and is very responsive even when dealing with complex drawings. A collaborative environment using XMPP/Jabber called Inkboard and a XML tree editor are included. Inkscape has many more features.
